If hens lose their feathers, their thermal insulation capacity will remain seriously impaired. This impacts directly on feed intake and <a href=\"https:\/\/hn-int.codiantwp.com\/nutrition#amino\">maintenance energy needs<\/a>. It therefore means an increase in the production feed costs. Poor feathering can also be caused by stress or pecking. This can a\ufb00ect hen welfare and their production performance. Behaviour-related issues can have multiple causes, but certain management practices can be applied to help prevent aggression and <span data-cmtooltip=\"<div class=glossaryItemBody>Canibalism:it is the undesirable behaviour in the layer hens. The birds attack smaller ones peaking aggressively until the birds dies due to the injuires or secondary infections in the injuries.<\/div>\" class=\"glossaryLink\"> canibalism <\/span>:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"milista1\">\n<li>Control light intensity and reduce it after<br \/>\nproduction peak<\/li>\n<li>Correct rations, especially amino acids, sodium and \ufb01ber content.<\/li>\n<li>Correct beak treatment \u2013 if permitted in your country.<\/li>\n<li>Stress avoidance (noises, direct sun rays, light intensity variation, etc.).<\/li>\n<li>Enrich the hens\u2019 environment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Feeding layers during production<\/h2>\n<p>Layers do not consume equal amounts of feed during the whole day. 70 % of feed consumption occurs in the early hours of the morning and the last four hours in the afternoon. They also have a predilection for calcium during the last hours of light.<\/p>\n<p>To mirror this behaviour better, <a href=\"https:\/\/hn-int.codiantwp.com\/download\/feed-management#times\">feed times<\/a> should be adapted to get a low level on the feeders for eight hours after switching on the lights. Under normal conditions 2\/3 of the daily feed should be supplied in the last eight hours. Ensure this afternoon feed is effectively distributed to the hens.<\/p>\n<p>H&amp;N \u201cBrown Nicks\u201d are not normally prone to put on fat with correctly formulated feeds. Therefore, feed restriction is not recommended. <a href=\"https:\/\/hn-int.codiantwp.com\/bird-assessment#values\">Monitor<\/a> egg size, body weight and production percentage very closely. These traits will decrease \ufb01rst if birds are being under fed.<\/p>\n<div class=\"row narrow\">\n<div class=\"autogrid\">\n<div class=\"col\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"centrarimg imgwp reduce10\" src=\"https:\/\/hn-int.codiantwp.com\/chickipediamedia\/layers\/production\/f7.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/>Normal level<\/div>\n<div class=\"col\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"centrarimg imgwp reduce10\" src=\"https:\/\/hn-int.codiantwp.com\/chickipediamedia\/layers\/production\/f8.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><br \/>\nLow Level<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"centrarimg imgwp reduce10\" src=\"https:\/\/hn-int.codiantwp.com\/chickipediamedia\/layers\/production\/f5.svg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"midnight\">Midnight Lighting<\/h2>\n<p>This management technique is used to increase feed intake and allow <span data-cmtooltip=\"<div class=glossaryItemBody>&lt;strong&gt;Calcium availability&lt;\/strong&gt;: the egg shell formation takes 20 hours, during this time high levels of calcium are requiered by the birds. This requierements can be satisfied by the diet, but part of the high requirements happen during the dark hours therefore nutritional and management technics should be applied to supply the calcium during the dark time when the needs of calcium are high.<\/div>\" class=\"glossaryLink\"> calcium availability <\/span> in the hours when the eggshell is formed, and its absorption is increased. It consists of lighting in the dark period to allow hens to feed and refill the crop.<br \/>\nThe following guidelines should be followed for correct application:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"milista1\">\n<li>Switch on the lighting for at least one hour and up to two hours. These hours are in addition to the normal period of light.<\/li>\n<li>Midnight period must be at least (and nev- er less than) three hours after switching o\ufb00 the lighting and at least three hours before the lights switch on.<\/li>\n<li>Feeders must be \ufb01lled before the lights switch on.<\/li>\n<li>Stress avoidance (noises, direct sun rays, light intensity variation, etc.).<\/li>\n<li>Water must be available.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Midnight lighting can be used with di\ufb00erent objectives:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"milista1\">\n<li>Increase in feed consumption. It can be used in rearing and\/or production. It is especially useful in <a href=\"https:\/\/hn-int.codiantwp.com\/house-environment#hot\">hot climates<\/a> where birds are unable to feed properly in day time.<\/li>\n<li>Improvement of eggshell quality. The availability of extra calcium in the intestine allows better calci\ufb01cation and reduces bone decalcification.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"centrarimg imgwp reduce80\" src=\"https:\/\/hn-int.codiantwp.com\/chickipediamedia\/layers\/production\/f6.svg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Laying Process<\/h2>\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"autogrid\">\n<div class=\"col\">\n<h3>Laying process<\/h3>\n<p>Egg formation is a complex process that occurs in the oviduct of the hen. The whole process takes around 24 hours, but forming the eggshell takes most of the time (18\u2013 21 hours). Lay is a critical moment for hens. If possible, they prefer a protected and dark area. The cloaca could be reversed during the lay process which can encourage cannibalism. If hens retain eggs due to stress, <a href=\"https:\/\/hn-int.codiantwp.com\/egg-quality\/\">shell defects<\/a> may occur. Therefore, avoid disturbing hens during maximum laying hours to reduce this kind of defect. This means not disturbing them by removing dead birds, feed distribution, inspecting cages . . .<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col\">\r\n\t<div class=\"paoc-image-popup\">\r\n\t\t<a class=\"paoc-popup-click paoc-popup-cust-714 paoc-popup-image paoc-popup-image\" href=\"javascript:void(0);\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"popupaoc-img\" src=\"https:\/\/hn-int.codiantwp.com\/chickipediamedia\/layers\/production\/f10.svg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a>\r\n\r\n\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\r\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h3>Laying window<\/h3>\n<p>The laying window is de\ufb01ned as the time in hours since the lay of the \ufb01rst egg to the last one. Its range varies between breeds of hens. 50 % of the lay takes place around 4\u20135 hours after switching on lighting or after the sunset. It is useful to know when most of the eggs have been laid.This information can also be used to advance or delay the time of sunset, although periods of 16 hours of light are used routinely.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"Egg\">Egg Collection<\/h2>\n<p>Egg collection impacts the external and <a href=\"https:\/\/hn-int.codiantwp.com\/egg-quality#internal\">internal quality<\/a> of the produced eggs. It must therefore be performed correctly in order not to degrade the value of the eggs:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"milista1\">\n<li>Collect eggs as soon as possible. Do not keep eggs in the house but collect them and store them in a cool (max. 18 \u00b0C) and dry place.<\/li>\n<li>Collect the eggs twice a day, especially in hot climates.<\/li>\n<li>Correct beak treatment \u2013 if permitted in your country.<\/li>\n<li>_Avoid <a href=\"https:\/\/hn-int.codiantwp.com\/transfer-15-18-weeks#space\">overstocked nests<\/a> or egg belts.
