Then switch back to the regular step-down lighting program. If this cannot be applied, 22 \u2013 24 hours of light during the \ufb01rst 2 \u2013 3 days is common practice. Providing a dark period during the day to allow the chicks to rest is highly recommended.In a dark house the light level should be lower than 3 <span data-cmtooltip=\"<div class=glossaryItemBody>&lt;strong&gt;Lux&lt;\/strong&gt;:It is equal to one lumen per square metre. In photometry, this is used as a measure of the intensity, as perceived by the human eye, of light that hits or passes through a surface<\/div>\" class=\"glossaryLink\"> lux <\/span> when the light-proof system is set. Be aware that temperature and humidity are related. This should be measured at drinker level. Light should be spread uniformly throughout the entire cage. It is important to avoid shady and dark areas in the brooding cage.<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"caja bgb2\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"centrarimg imgwp reduce20\" src=\"https:\/\/hn-int.codiantwp.com\/chickipediamedia\/layers\/brooding-1-21\/light.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<h3>Water<\/h3>\r\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"iconstyle\" src=\"https:\/\/hn-int.codiantwp.com\/chickipediamedia\/layers\/brooding-1-21\/icon-water.svg\" alt=\"\" \/> Set the height of the drinkers so the chicks can drink easily. 360-activated nipples are preferable in rearing houses. <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"centrarimg imgwp reduce70\" src=\"https:\/\/hn-int.codiantwp.com\/chickipediamedia\/layers\/brooding-1-21\/height-drinker.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/> If not available, and especially with infrared beak treated chicks, we recommend using cups or other extra drinking systems during the first 5 \u2013 7 days. Reduce the water pressure in the drinking system to create a hanging drop at chick eye level. Trigger the nipples or cups during the first 3 \u2013 4 days to encourage chicks to drink. <span data-cmtooltip=\"<div class=glossaryItemBody>&lt;strong&gt;Flush the lines&lt;\/strong&gt;: activity of replacing the water content of the drinking pipes with new water, cleaner and at lower temperature to have a good quality water at the drinking time for the bird. The pipe needs to be open at the end of the line, so water will come out and the drinking system will full into the pipes.<\/div>\" class=\"glossaryLink\"> flush the lines <\/span> just before housing the chicks and daily for the first 4 days. Feed should be scattered on the cage paper and renewed during the first 3 \u2013 5 days. Place abundant feed in the feeders to attract the chicks. <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"centrarimg imgwp reduce20\" src=\"https:\/\/hn-int.codiantwp.com\/chickipediamedia\/layers\/brooding-1-21\/feed.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/> <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"centrarimg imgwp reduce20\" src=\"https:\/\/hn-int.codiantwp.com\/chickipediamedia\/layers\/brooding-1-21\/feed1.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"col\">\r\n<div class=\"caja bgb2\">\r\n<h3>Ventilation<\/h3>\r\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"iconstyle\" src=\"https:\/\/hn-int.codiantwp.com\/chickipediamedia\/layers\/brooding-1-21\/ventilation.svg\" alt=\"\" width=\"188\" height=\"188\" \/> Supply suficient volumes of fresh air to remove dust and undesirable gases. Ensure suflcient air movement even on cool days. Strong movements of air disturb the chicks, they will avoid using draughty areas. This can negatively impact on chick distribution and activity. Adequate ventilation is especially important in hot weather.<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"caja bgb2\"><strong>Draft Incorrect<\/strong><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"centrarimg imgwp reduce20\" src=\"https:\/\/hn-int.codiantwp.com\/chickipediamedia\/layers\/brooding-1-21\/ventilation.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/> <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"centrarimg imgwp reduce20\" src=\"https:\/\/hn-int.codiantwp.com\/chickipediamedia\/layers\/brooding-1-21\/ventilation1.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"mychart\"><strong>A good brooding period is key to developing the gut, <a href=\"https:\/\/hn-int.codiantwp.com\/health-biosecurity\/#Vaccination_Programs\">immune system<\/a> and the skeleton. This period is therefore crucial to improve flock liveability during the first weeks, and to obtain good quality and productive pullets.<\/strong><\/div>\r\n<h2>How Do You Know That Everything Is Running Smoothly<\/h2>\r\n<h3>Pay attention to your chicks<\/h3>\r\n<!--<ul class=\"milista\">\r\n<li>Chicks cannot talk but they send you many signals:<\/li>\r\n<li>Check their distribution<\/li>\r\n<li>Check their activity<\/li>\r\n<li>Check the water and feed intake<\/li>\r\n<li>Check the sound they are making<\/li>\r\n<li>Check if they look comfortable!<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>-->\r\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"centrarimg imgwp reduce45 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/hn-int.codiantwp.com\/chickipediamedia\/layers\/brooding-1-21\/confortable.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\r\n<h3>Crop \ufb01ll measurement<\/h3>\r\n<p>Crop fill measurement is a good tool to check if the chicks are eating in the first two days of life.<\/p>\r\n<ul class=\"milista1\">\r\n<li>1: Sample around 50 \u2013 60 chicks. Take them randomly from around the house to ensure a reliable overview.<\/li>\r\n<li>2: Gently feel the crop.<\/li>\r\n<li>3. The crop should be full, soft and rounded in started chicks.<\/li>\r\n<li>4. Check the result according to the time after placement.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><strong>If the result is below target, check the brooding conditions and take corrective measures.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"spacy\">\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<div class=\"row\">\r\n<div class=\"narrow\">\r\n<div class=\"autogrid\">\r\n<div class=\"col\"><strong>Correct crop \ufb01lling<\/strong><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"centrarimg imgwp reduce20\" src=\"https:\/\/hn-int.codiantwp.com\/chickipediamedia\/layers\/brooding-1-21\/correct-crop.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/div>\r\n<div class=\"col\"><strong>Incorrect crop \ufb01lling<\/strong><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"centrarimg imgwp reduce20\" src=\"https:\/\/hn-int.codiantwp.com\/chickipediamedia\/layers\/brooding-1-21\/incorrect-crop.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"centrarimg imgwp reduce20\" src=\"https:\/\/hn-int.codiantwp.com\/chickipediamedia\/layers\/brooding-1-21\/info.svg\" alt=\"\" \/> \u00a0<\/p>\r\n<h3>Cloacal temperature<\/h3>\r\n<p>Chick temperature is between 40 \u2013 41 \u00b0C after the moment of full homeothermy. During the first week of life chicks are unable to <a href=\"https:\/\/hn-int.codiantwp.com\/house-environment\/\">control their body temperature<\/a> and it varies according to the ambient temperature. This information can be used to adjust house temperatures optimally. Use modern ear thermometers (see picture).<\/p>\r\n<ul class=\"milista1\">\r\n<li>1. Make sure you collect samples of chicks from different parts of the house. Sample chicks distributed throughout the house for reliable readings.<\/li>\r\n<li>2. Check their cloacal temperature.<\/li>\r\n<li>3. Collect the information, calculate the average and adjust the house temperatures accordingly to achieve optimal chick temperatures.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><strong>Important!<\/strong> <strong>A chick\u2019s body temperature does not correlate with the current temperature but with the temperature of the last few hours.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<div class=\"row\">\r\n<div class=\"autogrid\">\r\n<div class=\"col\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"centrarimg imgwp reduce10\" src=\"https:\/\/hn-int.codiantwp.com\/chickipediamedia\/layers\/brooding-1-21\/info.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"469\" height=\"176\" \/><\/div>\r\n<div class=\"col\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"centrarimg imgwp reduce30\" src=\"https:\/\/hn-int.codiantwp.com\/chickipediamedia\/layers\/brooding-1-21\/temprature.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"305\" height=\"252\" \/><\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<hr \/>\r\n<h2>Beak Treatment<\/h2>\r\n<p>Beak treatment is an important cannibalism\/<a href=\"https:\/\/hn-int.codiantwp.com\/production-period-25-100-weeks#pecking\">pecking<\/a> prevention measure in poultry management, especially in open houses with high light intensity. While various methods of beak treatment may be used: the objective is to treat the beak in a uniform manner that will permanently retard future beak growth. Improper beak treatment procedures may result in permanent damage to overall flock performance.<\/p>\r\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"centrarimg imgwp reduce80\" src=\"https:\/\/hn-int.codiantwp.com\/chickipediamedia\/layers\/brooding-1-21\/remember.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\r\n<h3>Infrared beak treatment of day-old chicks<\/h3>\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"centrarimg imgwp reduce45 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/hn-int.codiantwp.com\/chickipediamedia\/layers\/brooding-1-21\/info1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"800\" \/><\/p>\r\n<p>The beaks of day-old chicks can already be treated at the hatchery using infrared technology. This method can provide more uniform beak treatment because it is performed by a machine and not by different crews. The beak remains intact until 10 \u2013 21 days and then the treated portion separates. Because of this process, chicks will need extra care during the brooding period. Pay attention to:<\/p>\r\n<ul class=\"milista1\">\r\n<li><strong>Drinking water:<\/strong> It is vital to encourage the water intake in the first days. Preferably use 360-activated nipples as they are easy for chicks to use. Additional cup drinkers are also preferable. If bi-directional nipples are the only option, providing additional cup drinkers is obligatory.<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Light<\/strong>: Ensure the light level in the drinker area is 30 \u2013 50 lux.<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Feed:<\/strong> Scatter feed on paper until day 7.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h3>7\u201310 day beak treatment<\/h3>\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"centrarimg imgwp reduce45 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/hn-int.codiantwp.com\/chickipediamedia\/layers\/brooding-1-21\/beak.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"670\" height=\"553\" \/><\/p>\r\n<p>The conventional method of beak treatment is to treat the beaks with a hot blade. Beak treatment should ideally be performed in the first 7 \u2013 10 days. It is a delicate and precise manual procedure. Ensure these conditions are fulfilled before starting the process:<\/p>\r\n<ul class=\"milista1\">\r\n<li><strong>Healthy birds:<\/strong> If birds are sick or in poor condition, treatment should be delayed until the flock has recovered. Beak treatment in an unhealthy flock can severely damage its viability.<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Trained crew:<\/strong> Due to the delicate and precise nature of this procedure, proper crew training is of the utmost importance. Only allow well-trained crews to perform this procedure. Never hurry the crew especially if they are inexperienced.<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Adapted equipment:<\/strong> Hot blade machines are available on the market. For correct beak treatment, the blade temperature should be approximately 650 \u00b0C. The blade color may be used as an indicator. The use of a template with guide hole is recommended to make treatment easier and more uniform. Keeping the machine clean and in good maintenance is vital for good results.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h3>And the days after beak treatment . . .<\/h3>\r\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"centrarimg imgwp reduce45 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/hn-int.codiantwp.com\/chickipediamedia\/layers\/brooding-1-21\/beak1.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\r\n<p>Special care should be provided to the chicks in the days following beak treatment:<\/p>\r\n<ul class=\"milista1\">\r\n<li>Monitor water intake. It will be reduced for 2 or 3 days but then the previous intake should be recovered.
